Another way to ascertain the type of tourism is to define the purpose of undergoing this wonderful activity. Is it for recreation, business or adventure? What the reason triggering your visit?

Types of tourism (on the basis of purpose).  Here are some of them:

Recreational tourism: The most common type of tourism is undertaken for the intent of leisure. Touring in this case is meant for rest or a change of environment. Most times exotic places, such as beaches are preferred. It could also include a theme park or any other attraction that elicits a change of environment for the visitor.
Business Tourism: Usually shorter than other forms of tourism, business tourism is designated for commercial purposes. As the name implies, it concerns businessmen and women, or professionals that leave their country and go to another in order to close business deals, expand the development of a commercial unit, acquire managerial or technical know etc.
Cultural tourism: This is meant to appease the curiosity of people for the culture and norms of other nations. The willingness of the tourist to acquire explicit knowledge about the history, tradition and rituals of a country triggers him or her to be involved in cultural tourism. This type of tourism can entail trips to festivals, tours to various landmarks and museums.
Educational tourism: The curiosity of travelling can have a great impact in this type of tourism. Another factor that fuels educational tourism is the need to amplify the academic knowledge or study of one’s discipline. For example, the study of tourism, travel and hospitality management is preferably chosen at a country whose source of income mostly stems from tourism (i.e. Greece, Australia, France etc.). Or it could be that the infrastructure and the wherewithal for a better adoption of one’s profession aren’t available in his/her country.
Sport tourism: As the name implies, sport tourism is the activity of leaving to another country in order to experience or participate on sports. The Olympics, FIFA World Cup and other athletic events are reasons why people travel from a place to another. It also be that a sport that people want to be involved into is well taught in a place with the required sporting facilities (hiking on mountainous regions).
Medical Tourism: People with severe ailments are advised to visit countries where specialists doctors can tackle with patients’ health grievances more efficiently than in ones’ home country. One example of such medical tourist destination is India. Another destination renowned for the dexterity of plastic surgeons on cosmetic surgeries is Brazil.
Religious tourism: Christians, Muslims and others have this reverential habit of visiting place of sacred importance to the god they worship. For example, Nigerian Christians  each year are involved on pilgrimages to visit places temples or cities altogether like Jerusalem. It is meant to complete the religious duties of a worshiper
There are many more types of tourism that have grown to be innovative and interesting.

There are divergent types of tourism.  They are copious and each of them has intriguing characteristics. However, it is prudent that they are classified on two categories
1.       On the basis of geography(domestic and international tourism)
2.       On the basis of purpose (business tourism, sport tourism, etc.)

On the basis of geography

Domestic Tourism
Domestic Tourism is the activity of residents of one country travelling within that same country. It could encompass local excursion, regional trips or even trips on a national level. The cost incurred in transportation, stay and leisure or business is all part of it.
DT happens to be the first type of tourism that still accounts for a considerable contribution in a country’s GDP. DT entails the following features:
                                 i.            The cost of trips is lower than the expenses made when leaving the borders of the country.
ii.            Destinations are nearer to the visitor’s habitual environment. Therefore the trips made to the destinations are frequent.
iii.            Domestic tourists are most probably aware of the language, the customs, the laws, the culture etc.
iv.            Tourists are more demanding in the quality of products or services they receive. They are witty of consumer protection rights.

Domestic Tourism in Nigeria
DT seems to be a major contributor and employer of labor, which consequentially means that it generates revenue for the Nigerian government. The huge population can be served by the domestic tourism in terms of job creation, poverty alleviation and revenue generation. The exchange of information, education and culture unifies the Nigerian youth and women to be  immensely empowered. Specifically, the top events that spice up the domestic tourism in Nigeria can start from the annual  Calabar Festival in Cross-River State to the Osun Osogbo in Osun State. We can proudly say that 10% of the Nigerian economy is ruled by the domestic Tourism.

International Tourism
International tourism involves crossing the boundaries of a country to another one. It is very likely to entail different currencies, different languages and different types of people. Unlike domestic tourism, Int’l tourism is concerned with passport, visa or conversion of one currency into another. Based on who is the visitor, international tourism can be segregated into inbound and outbound tourism.
Inbound tourism is when people from another country visit your country. For example, Ethiopians enjoy inbound tourism when Chinese or Italian visitors tour in Ethiopia.
Outbound tourism is when people in your country visit another country, i.e. Ethiopians visiting China or Italy.

International tourism in South Africa
South Africa’s spectacular scenery, balmy climate, world class infrastructure and friendly people have made the country very inviting. According to the Statistics SA show, the number of tourists visiting in 2016 was inflated by 13% more than 2015. UK, USA and German visitors were at the top of the tree whereas Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Lesotho were African travelers who came up to be among the international tourists.

This time the post was lengthy. But it was also educative and interesting to read.  I hope you feel informed and prepared for the tourism on the basis of purpose.

“Tourism is when you tour around a city or village to know the place”. “Tourism is to be involved sightseeing”. These are some statements that people would make when asked to define tourism. There aren’t necessarily wrong. But they are also not entirely accurate. It is time to allow higher authorities to lead the way into the definition of Tourism.
The World Tourism Organization (WTO), an agency of the United Nations, describes tourism more generally, in terms which go “beyond the common perception of tourism as being limited to holiday activity only”. WTO describes tourism in terms of people “travelling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than a consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes.
When we are uncertain about a specific word, we resort to the dictionary, whether soft or hard copy. So let’s try the three most popular dictionaries
  • ·         Cambridge English Dictionary: Tourism is the business of providing services such as transport, places to stay or entertainment for people who are on holiday.
  • ·         Oxford English Dictionary: The commercial organization and operation of holidays and visits to places of interest.
  • ·         Merrier’s Webster Dictionary: a) The activity of travelling to a place for pleasure b) The business of providing hotels, restaurants, entertainment, etc. for people who are travelling

From the above, we could safely state that tourism can be viewed from the perspective of business, leisure or the industry as a whole. In another series of articles, we will ascertain these three angles holistically.
The WTO proceeds to define the person involved in tourism-the tourist. “Tourist is a person who stays at least one night but not more than a year in a foreign country”. Also it goes on to define the excursionist as “a person who visits a foreign country but doesn’t stay overnight.

Up next, as earlier promised, the types of tourism will be exposed. Stay tuned.

You know every subject, every course, every function, every theory-almost everything has a definition. It attracts a meaning. Some may attribute that “thing” to a layman explanation; some other scholars or acknowledged institutions will go the extra mile to ascertain the accurate meaning of the subject in question. These same scholars can proceed to Types, Approaches, Advantages, Disadvantages and Importance.
That is the precise pattern we will adopt to accurately define and elaborate on Tourism. That ought to be so because, like early said, everything has been ascribed to an explanation. Tourism, Travel and Hospitality shouldn’t be left out.  Rather, it should have its own to field to “brag” about. Therefore the next articles shall relate to the rudiment of Tourism in the series of steps aligned as:
·         Definition of Tourism
·         Types of Tourism
·         Approaches to Tourism
·         Advantages of Tourism
·         Disadvantages of Tourism
·         Importance of Tourism

Stay tuned!!!

It enthralls you when you think of the fact that there are different people, places, cultures, norms, languages, traditions, habits and institutions out there- different from the ones in your personal environment, the country you live in or the city you reside. Sometimes those variables earlier mentioned could be analogous, similar, or entirely divergent but certainly not identical. This controversy can even be as proximate as from the nearest village or town to where you stay. But this same controversy has been a cornerstone for an activity, a business, an industry which has ministered to the affairs and needs of people since time immemorial-TOURISM
Tourism is a tenet of life that contributed to the commercial activities of traders in empires that were as prominent as Greece, Assyria, Egypt of Persia. Bilateral and multilateral alliances between two or more states and countries were through the physical movement of relative figures from one place to another. Tourism, over the years has exceeded paramount  purposes such as business and politics and has taken itself a notch higher-leisure and recreation. In a bid to imbue the latter to this sector, tourism has given birth to a branch proudly called HOSPITALITY.
Hospitality is an identified factor in tourism as it aids the latter through different manners-in terms of stay (Hotels), food and beverage (Restaurants and bars),  health and beauty (Spas), exotic exhibitions(Resorts and Beaches), cultural heritage(Museums), physical maintenance (Sports) and so on and so forth. Tourism and Hospitality go hand in hand and the bridge between those is TRAVEL.
Travel is the process or action that includes the physical movements of tourists, visitors or passengers, as you may attribute it, from one place to another. It comes in a legion of forms- through sea (i.e. cruises), land (buses) or air (airplanes).
These three giants make up a wonderful industry- Tourism, Travel and Hospitality. It is an industry with amazing prospects and a terrain in which entrepreneurial innovations can be realized.
Cruise Africa- Travel and Hospitality in Africa is a blog that masters on Tourism, Travel and Hospitality in Africa. It will disseminate information and deliberate on matters regarding the economy, employment, features, components and relevance of the industry in Africa. It would scroll through different African countries and incorporate the crux of Tourism and Hospitality.
Of course, because TTH(Tourism, Travel and Hospitality) is a global item of discussion, I will definitely refer to other countries other than  that of the Black Continent. The blog will ensure that  it  compares, contrasts and imbibe what TTH of the rest 6 continents have to offer.

Sit, relax and educate yourself with the sumptuous content of Cruise Africa. Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
